Horizontal / Vertical Relationship
Use this to ...
- Constrain a line to be horizontal or vertical.
- Constrain two keypoints to have the same horizontal or vertical alignment.
- Play the video to learn how to create a profile, and assign a horizontal constraint to one of the lines. You will also see two keypoints aligned to solid edges. Do not adjust your volume; there is no sound associated with this video.
Prerequisites
- Solid Edge must be in the Profile mode. Profile mode is automatically activated when creating a sketch feature or creating a profile for a feature.
Process: Creating a Horizontal or Vertical Relationship
1. Click Horizontal/Vertical on the Features and Relationships toolbar.
2. Pick a line in the Graphics window or pick two keypoints.
3. The line moves to become horizontal or vertical and places a plus sign display at the midpoint. If two points are selected, the first point aligns with the second point and places a plus sign display on a dashed line between the points.
Tips
- If groups of elements that contain Horizontal/Vertical relationships rotate, the relationships change to perpendicular and/or parallel relationships to maintain the constraints.

- Make two lines lie in the same straight line.
- Make a line and an edge lie in the same straight line.
- Play the video for an overview on how the collinear constraint is used to force a line to align with a reference plane. You'll also see how two lines can be forced to align with each other. Do not adjust your volume; there is no sound associated with this video.
Key Points
- This constraint is displayed as a circle at the midpoints of the selected lines.

Process: Creating a Collinear Relationship
1. Click Collinear from the Features and Relationships toolbar.
2. Pick the first line in the Graphics window.
- Pick the second line. The first line aligns with the second line and a large circle displays at the midpoints of each of the selections.
Use this to ...
- Make two curves tangent to each other.
- Play the video to see a demonstration creating two lines and two arcs, and assigning tangent constraints to help define the shape of the profile. Do not adjust your volume; there is no sound associated with this video.
Key Points
- Tangency can be applied to a line and arc combination, or between two arcs. It cannot be applied to two lines.
- This constraint is displayed as a small circle at the point of tangency.
Prerequisites
- Solid Edge must be in the Profile mode. The Profile mode is automatically activated when creating a sketch feature or creating a profile for a feature.
Process: Creating a Tangent Relationship
1. Click Tangent on the Features and Relationships toolbar.
2. In the Graphics window, pick the first curve
3. Pick the second curve. The first curve moves tangent to the second curve.
4. Repeat creating tangent constraints until all required curves are tangent.
